I find it a bit unsettling...

Also, the door release is disguised as part of the reverse lamp. I cannot unsee this every time I encounter an EcoS port on the road.

That's only acceptable if there's a rear mounted spare

that’s because in other regions it has the spare tire mounted on the rear, and a liftgate wouldn’t work with the added weight. And it would have been impractical to basically re-design the entire rear aperture on a refresh/federalization.

Adds inconvenience to the insult and injury of forcing this on the US :
While denying us this:

It was designed for one:
I think Ford has done away with that in favor of a goo+inflator setup.

Probably more equal would be the Ford Fiesta Active.

Last time I checked, Ford’s home country of the United States of America doesn’t get that Fiesta either :(

Nah, you don’t. We get it though.
I don't know what Ford were thinking when they came out with the Active range.

The rear hatch release is kinda clever, too.

Took me forever to figure that out at the auto show. Had to do some internet searching.

A little plastic cladding and a 1/2" lift work wonders for one’s willingness to buy a hatchback, apparently.

Did they? I’ve never seen one with the spare (though I haven’t seen many to begin with), and a Google search says Ford removed it for all 2019 models world wide. I can’t find a single photo of an Ecosport with a spare tire and a US plate.

I am almost certain I saw one with a rear spare within the past week. Cars.com isn’t providing many results.

My CRV did that and in the end I would rather have the lift back to shield from rain and you can carry larger loads with the back tied down. The side open didn’t seem like it would do well with that and could damage it. I got rid of it and I am much happier now so there you go.

It’s ridiculous though, base model, regular, performance, luxury and outdoors-y.
eg Trend, Trend 1, Active 1, Active X, Active B&O (Bang & Olufson), ST-Line, ST-Line X, ST2, ST 3 and Vignale.
It's just too much, it's the same again for the Focus in hatchback and estate.

Holy shit, dude! I was behind one just today and thought the clear lens cover came off the passenger side taillight, and then it dawned on me that it was the door handle, and that it was a rear door, not a hatch . I JUST figured that out this morning!

It is an option. Otherwise it's the goo. Because the camera has to be relocated with the spare.

In India, we have a rear mounted spare invariably, and the rear opens in similar way with a small button pressing near tail-light. I like the rear mounted spare design.

It was originally designed with a rear mounted spare, but Ford changed the design for some countries. It still comes with a mounted spare in India, not a retrofit.

Yeah, damn them for not offering something here they’ll just lose money on because you still wouldn’t buy one and they’d have to put $4,000 on the hood just to get them off the lot.

Are you in Michigan? It could have been a manufacturer test car on temporary import.

You might be right about 2019, I dont really keep up with my Ecosport news. Here’s a 2018:

Except that the chrome on the other side is under the lights’s plastic lens and the never match.

I wish more vehicles did a rear mounted spare. More trunk space and I love barn doors
This should be more common on all SUVs/vans/CUVs

The only benefit, at least for me, is that I wouldn’t hit my head on an overhead hatch, like I do on my wife’s Explorer.

My Cube’s rear hatch opens the same way. It sucks living in a city with street parking and a lot of one-way streets.

I am not a fan of the ecosport at all. I looked at it and went: WTF are you thinking Ford? And then it dawned on me... It’s WTF are Americans
thinking, or rather, people in general. Crossovers everywhere. I get it, they are convenient and offer a lot of room. But boy, they are slow and engaging
to drive. I’ll stick with the previous
